Grenadier

Alternative Names: Rat tail

Monterey Bay Recommendation: Look for other "Best Choice" seafood options first. If none are available, grenadier from the U.S. West Coast is a "Good Alternative," but know that information about this deepwater fish is lacking.

Uses in Cooking: This inconveniently shaped fish is really only good for broiling and deep frying. The long skinny fillets must be handled gently.

Similar Fish: Monkfish, sculpin, Ling cod

Description: The long and pointy little fillets have an interesting texture like many deepwater crustacean eaters. The meat is white and not particularly oily. Flavor is mild.

Fun Facts: Little is known about this fish since they live at depths of up to 20000 feet. Some of them have photophores that allow them to produce light.
