Pollock

Alternative Names: Green Cod

Monterey Bay Recommendation: Look for other "Best Choice" seafood options first. If none are available, pollock caught in the U.S. Georges Bank and U.S. Gulf of Maine or the Canadian Maritimes with bottom gill nets or longlines is a "Good Alternative." Say, "No, thanks" to pollock caught in the Canadian Maritimes with bottom trawls. The Marine Stewardship Council has certified some Atlantic pollock and Walleye pollock as sustainable.

Uses in Cooking: Can be baked, broiled, deep fried, sauted. Are most commonly made into fish and chips or fish sticks. They are also used to make imitation crab meat.

Similar Fish:  Cod, Haddock, Tilapia

Description: These fish are the most mild of the mild white fish, having almost no natural flavor. They are even more mild than cod. They are medium firm with large flakes.

Fun Facts: The Pollock is a supremely boring fish, with almost no interesting facts. Jackson Pollock was an American artist know for his drip painting, his volatile personality, and his alcoholism which ultimately led to his death in a fatal car crash.
