Sierra Mackerel

Alternative Names: Pacific Sierra

Monterey Bay Recommendation: All types of mackerel are best choice or good alternative.

Uses in Cooking: Smoke pairs well with the flavor of mackerel. Cooking these on a cedar plank, an open fire, or a charcoal fire is ideal. Otherwise, they can be baked or broiled and stand up to heavy flavors.

Similar Fish: Spanish mackerel, bluefish, wahoo

Description: The meat of this fish has an assertive flavor that stands up to heavily spiced preparations.   It is not as strong as the Atlantic mackerel or King Mackerel, but the oiliness is apparent.  You will either love this fish or hate it.

Fun Facts: This is the most abundant gamefish along the Pacific coast of Mexico. It has many large, sharp teeth and feeds aggressively. This missile shaped fish is fast and hard hitting and is prized by anglers for its fight.
